The Epaulette shark is only about 9 million years old as a species, making it the most recent branch in the shark family. And it is slowly but surely evolving into a land animal

When I read this entry the first time, one of my first thoughts was, ‘Well, this is all incredibly horrifying and awful, but you still have your secret pen and journal, buddy! Use paper from that to make another letter and envelope! You’ve got something to work with!’ But on the heels of that came the rational counterpoint train of thought:
Yes, Jonathan still has the journal.
To be miserably specific, all Jonathan has left is his journal.
If he uses up some of that paper and gets caught by Dracula again, then that gives away the fact that he has a secret pen and paper stowed away. A secret notebook to judge by the sheets’ torn edges. Meaning his very last piece of personal property and refuge gets put in danger of being stolen the second he tries to use it for anything else.
He simultaneously has means of writing to others and the implicit threat that it will get vanished too if he dares to try and use it.
Hey know what’s fucked up. The little surge of hope Jonathan gets at trying to get his letters out isn’t even for his own rescue. It’s just for the chance for his fate to be known, and the warning of the danger that will soon be on the way.
He doesn’t want Mina to be left wondering what happened to him forever, and doesn’t want her to be vulnerable and unprepared when the Count arrives. His hope was for her.

Its because they legitimately dont.
The “fuzz” from CRT monitors was something that was definitely accounted for and taken advantage of back in the day when it came to video games! While this effect is noticeable in 3D games, it’s MUCH more visible when it comes to 2D sprites:
Just look how much more depth these simple sprites of Princess Peach and Bowser from Super Mario RPG seem to have when seen through the “dots” of a CRT TV screen!

jonathan’s “slept without dreaming. despair has its own calms” from today’s email breaks my heart in so many ways.
first and foremost is his attitude, how still, despite everything, he tries to find something positive to look on. yes he might have had his hopes burnt to cinders, he may feel more isolated than ever (both physically by being locked in his room, and psychologically from not being able to trust in other human people outside the castle), but hey! no nightmares!
then secondly is the significance of it. no nightmares implies he Has been having terrible dreams for days now, and not been writing down a single one, most likely as a coping mechanism. he doesn’t want to upset himself further by recalling his nightmares, and he may see no point to it either- has a bad dream fifth day in a row. what difference does it make? not worth noting it in his journal
